High School Tag Contest Winners

The Tidelanders recently announced our High School Tag Singing Contest Winners! We were pleased it was a success!!

Particularly important, the tag contest was funded in part, by a grant from Harmony Foundation International. Moreover the balance necessary was funded through the generosity of Tidelander member donations.

Firstly, we promoted the contest to over 200 high schools in Harris and Fort Bend counties in Texas. Even so, our Outreach Chair sent letters communicating the rules, awards, submission deadlines, and judging requirements.

Following the end of the deadline, we received all of the submissions in early April. Soon afterwards, the Tidelanders judging panel met. Next they assessed and scored each competing Quartet. Lastly, the competition results were announced in mid-April.

TAG CONTEST WINNER awards

Subsequently, certificates and cash awards were provided to each participating quartet and their school music program. Evidently, the awards generated some excitement with the participating students.

“I presented the award to our Tiger Tones today in class. They were ecstatic! Thank you for creating this opportunity for them!”

Furthermore, the Tidelanders offered the contest winners spots in upcoming Tidelander performances. Hence, we offered the top Men’s and Women’s Quartets their choice of show dates: May 21 or June 25.

First, the Women’s Treble Ensemble Quartet from Kerr High School performed via video. We played their video on May 21 during our Fort Bend Family Promise show. Then the Men’s Quartet, UmbraFour from Shadow Creek High School performed live. UmbraFour sang two songs during our St. Paul’s “Share a Good Time” show on the evening of June 25.

Who Sang the Song Smile

“Smile” continues to be considered timeless. Meaning the message always seems to be relevant. As long as it continues to be popular, artists will continue to cover and interpret it’s meaning in order to continue to have it resonate with audiences. Modern artists like Michael Jackson have arranged and performed it.
