Appointment of ben may NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR

The Houston Tidelanders Chorus is pleased to announce the appointment of Ben May as the Music Director.

Original Announcement

The appointment of Ben May as the Houston Tidelanders New Music Director was announced when it happened in 2018.

In Ben's Words

Ben first states why he wants to be the Tidelanders’ Musical Director. He started by saying, “Since I ‘discovered’ barbershop harmony in high school, I have loved the sound, the teamwork” continuing, he said “and most importantly, the camaraderie that is present in tight-knit barbershop ensembles”.

Ben's Commitment to Our Mission

Ben full on supports the Tidelanders mission. Consequently, he then said, “I want to lead the Tidelanders, musically, because I hope to perpetuate that tradition of brotherhood and unity”.

Unity in Harmony

Above all, Ben recognizes the need for unity. Mr. May concluded with, “I want to help lead this chorus because I believe that choral music can and should bring our city, our nation, and our world closer together.”

The Educator

In other conversations, Ben has described himself as multifaceted. He in particular talked about himself as a Teacher, a Student, and a Competitor. For example, he sang with the Westminister Choir and Kantorei Early Music Ensemble.

Background and Education

Ben is currently Director of Choral Activities at Brazosport College. He expects to receive his Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting in May 2019. He attends the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music

His primary instructors are Betsy Cook Weber and Jeb Mueller. He first obtained Music degrees from Westminster Choir College (Princeton, NJ) and Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN) before enrolling at UH.
