Beginning singers
Technique and Music Theory
You may or may not understand music theory; that’s perfectly okay. If you’ve played an instrument, you may have some experience with notes, musical scales, rhythms, time signatures, etc. Do you want to learn more? You can start by reading about the Basics of Music Theory. Are you interested in how barbershop is different from choir?
We can help you and provide you with guidance to learn the basics in order to sing with us. That being said, if you never learn music theory, that’s okay too. Our learning tracks can provide what you need to help you contribute to the success of the chorus.
About Tidelanders
We do not sing karaoke. Our chorus members sing a cappella in four-part harmony (tenor, lead, baritone, and bass) in Houston.
What Should You Expect
Dr. Ben May, our Musical Director, will have guests sing against piano notes to understand your range and which part might suit you best. Don’t worry, it’s not stressful, we’ve all done it.
Can Anyone Learn How to Sing
Yes, if you enjoy singing and want to learn how to sing better than you do today, we can help you! All that’s required is a love of music and the motivation to learn to sing.
Learn to Sing
Participating in our chorus is a great way to learn how to sing. Because we are a performing chorus, we have opportunities that we work towards during the year. These goals provide our member singers with the drive to learn the songs in our repertoire. Learning the songs enables us to then make music together as a chorus – which continues to provide us with the opportunity to learn more about music theory.
Beginning Voice Lessons
We work with several knowledgeable and affordable music coaches that can help you learn some of the basics like posture, proper breathing techniques, etc. Depending on the need or demand for voice lessons, we sometimes have a vocal coach come and provide Private Vocal Instruction (PVI) during rehearsal for the convenience of our chorus members.
Although it isn’t required, we recommend those that are new to singing or that haven’t sung in a while take voice lessons.
Voice Lessons Near Me
The vocal coaches we know live in different parts of the city of Houston. Our rehearsal location in Bellaire is fairly well centralized in the Bellaire area. So if we have vocal coaches come to rehearsals, that could be a convenient option.
Singing Lessons Online
We can also help you decide if voice lessons online or in-person vocal lessons would be better for you. Some of our members have taken online courses as well as in-person or remote in-person lessons.
What tools we use
We provide guest books and access to our musical repertoire via professional learning tracks relevant for each specific part: tenor, lead, baritone, and bass as well as all four parts together. If you simply sing against the learning track for a given song, you can work on refining your ear and with repetition, you’ll be able to develop your “singer’s ear”.
Community
Participating in our singing community may promote well being in our guests and members. Research shows that group singing activities can promote wellness.
Well Being
People that regularly take part in leisure activities as a part of a group or team report higher levels of psychological well-being than those who take part in similar activities on their own.
Psychological
Group choral activities may have a positive impact on mood, increase happiness, reduce stress and anxiety in participants.
Physical
Choral singing activities can improve mood, help focus people's attention, and stimulate the mind and cognition.
