Enablement
The Chapter will supply each guest with literature about the Society and the Chapter. We will also lend you a Guest Music Book containing a copy of the current Houston Tidelanders Performing Chorus repertoire to help you sing with us during rehearsals.
We also provide electronic copies of all of our song repertoire, both PDF and learning “track” recordings, so that you can practice at home via a phone, computer, or mobile device. Learning tracks combined with advice from our Director and section leads help our members learn how to sing better, without additional singing lessons.
Attendance Requirements
Rehearsals are our most important tool for learning to perform our music as an ensemble. We expect all of our members to attend all rehearsals unless they are sick or out of town.
A prospective singer must attend several rehearsals, three is typical before you will be eligible to audition to become a member of our a cappella group. We rehearse Monday nights from 7-10 pm (see our Why Sing With Us and Sing With Us pages for more information). Please wear comfortable shoes because we do our singing on the risers.
Auditions
Our singing auditions are part of the process where we assess whether you have aptitude for a cappella harmony singing.
Part one: This is a low pressure session to gauge your voice type and range, and your singing experience. No songs need to be memorized. This session confirms that you have the potential to proceed to the next audition step.
Part two: Here you will show that you can be a reliable member of the performing chorus. You'll memorize one of our songs and then perform it privately for the director with a quartet of our section leaders. We will provide feedback after your audition. You can repeat the audition if necessary.
Become a Tidelander
After you have passed your auditions, you will be proposed for membership in the Tidelanders. After our Board has accepted you, and you arrange to pay your dues to the Tidelanders and the Barbershop Harmony Society, you will be a full-fledged member of the Tidelanders!
