Why You Should Attend Guest Night
Many people get joy out of listening to music. Then there are those that experience joy from singing. Then it's even rarer to find those that excel at producing quality music. If you're not familiar with our genre of music, singing ringing chords is highly addictive. You've been warned! 🙂
Barbershop is well known for what’s known as close harmony singing. The most common traits about it is our use of four part close harmonies, ringing chords with (and without) overtones, echoing or the repeating of specific words, and more! It’s a musical genre rich with history and tradition.Â
When we perform our Barbershop arranged music, our audiences will be able to distinguish each of the individual singing parts. However, most will (or should) notice that someone in the audience should always be able to clearly hear the melody of the song being performed.Â
The four vocal parts may move together in the same measure, may sing each part of a major or minor chord (which you can distinguish because they “rub” together with some disharmony. You can read more details about what defines the barbershop style of music.
Why Should You Come To Guest Night
Here are just three (3) simple reasons why you should come to The Houston Tidelanders Guest Night.
1. First and Foremost: To Have Fun!
You will not be sitting around twiddling your thumbs. You won't be listening to us all sing without your participation. Everyone gets more comfortable once we're singing together. To that end we will get everyone of our guests singing with the rest of the men as quickly as possible.
You'll get to experience for yourself Barbershop warmth and camaraderie. If you like to sing (even in the shower), you'll get to enjoy yourself with plenty of singing. Just wait until we all sing a major chord together and make it ring so that we can all her the phantom notes associated with overtones!
2. We Will Teach You Songs
You will learn how to sing barbershop-style music:
- Tags: the first and shortest is called a “tag” in barbershop music. It’s just the end of a song, full of cool chords, and easy to teach.Â
- a new song! Lastly, we will be learning and singing part of a new song together – new to the Tidelanders, too!
3. We Will Help You
If you need help, we’ll give it. If the problem is finding the right pitch on a note, one or more of us can sing it for you. Second, our Musical Director is great at explaining musical concepts. We’ll explain some basic music theory along the way to help you understand the “why” and not just the “how”. All of that being said, we will focus on more singing and less talking.
