COMPETITIONS
Notable Competition History
Houston Tidelanders performing a cappella chorus and our singers contribute to the musical arts in Houston, Texas. We strive to perform technically accurate and emotionally moving music and serve as an example to youth in harmony.
We have continued to perform at many local and international competitions. In fact, The Tidelanders have won our District level competition 17 times! We were able to secure second place at the International Competition in 1969 and a total of 9 top 10 finishes.
Scoring in these events is dictated by three main categories.
First, music. The musical selection performed is evaluated to determine if the song style meets barbershop suitability. The musical arrangement is also analyzed to see if the performers were able to artistically execute the song and bring it to life.
Second, performance. The judge evaluates the vocal and visual aspects of the performance. The performance is judged based on how well the performers create an emotional response in their audience.
Lastly, singing. This category is about tonality, pitch, vocal skill and expression along with unity and a consistency across all of the singers.
A Cappella Singing Competition Sponsor
The Houston Tidelanders are proud to sponsor an annual High School a cappella Quartet singing contest. Our inaugural competition was in April of 2022 and consisted of singers putting together their own Quartet and then singing a very short musical element called a “tag”. We had three ensemble categories: Men, Women, and Mixed.
We look forward to hosting this competition again next year!
